What are collection costs?

As of July 1, 2012, the Law on Standardization of Extrajudicial Collection Costs (also known as the Law on Collection Costs or WIK) applies. This law legally regulates the amount of collection costs in a graduated scale.

Collection fees are calculated as a percentage of the amount someone still has to pay. The higher the amount, the lower the percentage used.

Collection fees may be charged 14 days after the debtor receives the payment reminder and fails to pay.

Invoice amount (principal Collection fee percentage at most Minimum compensation collection costs Maximum compensation collection costs Cumulative
€ 0 – € 2.500 15% € 40,- € 375,- € 375,-
€ 2.501 – € 5.000 10% € 250,- € 625,-

Amount of collection costs for installment payments up to €266.67

When multiple installments from the same agreement of up to €266.67 per installment have not been paid, over a six-month period, €40 may be charged once and €20 per installment for the remaining unpaid installments. The effect of this regulation is that the creditor must look back six months for each unpaid installment to determine how much collection costs may be charged. Only when no collection costs have been charged for six months may €40 be charged again.

This cumulation scheme for collection costs on installment payments will apply from Oct. 1, 2024.

Month Installment amount Collection fee amount

January €125 €40

March €125 €20

May €125 €20

December €125 €40

2. Multiple installments
Use this collection calculator when multiple installments from the same agreement have not been paid. For unpaid installments of up to €266.67 per installment, you may be charged once €40 and five times €20 over a six-month period.

3. Combination
If someone has not paid both monthly amounts and a one-time amount (such as the deductible or a final bill), you must calculate the one-time amount separately.
Use the collection calculator for “one principal amount” for this purpose .
